This is a great and wonderful playing example of a 1958 Gibson Les Paul PAF Gold Top. It has a great feeling neck and absolutely screaming PAF pickups. It is in good condition; overall 8 out of 10.
This Gibson Les Paul PAF Gold Top (SN#8 1117) was made in the Gibson factory, Kalamazoo, MI in 1958.
This instrument has never been broken or cracked. It has no overspray, touch up, or fill ins. It black lights perfectly.
The finish shows very nice patina with mild to moderate play wear and slight weather checking on the top. The back and sides are in similar condition with a small area of buckle wear on the back.
The neck is a very nice ’58 shape with a subtle V contour on the first few frets.
The original frets show very little play wear. The fretboard is also in excellent condition showing no pitting or grooves.
The tuners were replaced at some point with Grovers and the tuner holes were reamed slightly to accommodate these. The guitar currently has period correct 50’s era Klusons back on.
The cream pickup rings, pickguard and jack plate are all in good to excellent condition. This guitar is a factory stop tailpiece/ tune-o-matic bridge. It has never had a Bigsby installed, and has no extra holes.
The pickups are original PAFs reading at a smoking 9.1 at the bridge and a clear but throaty sounding 7.3 at the neck position. The pickups appear to have been unsoldered at some point. This could explain the hotter than usual bridge pickup. It is possible that the pickups could have been in and out of this guitar, as it shows some solder touch up in the control cavity. The pots appear to be correct, but I couldn’t get a date without removing one.
It is accompanied by a 5 latch, brown Lifton case.
It weighs 9.2 lbs.
