1950’s Gibson Les Paul models are considered the “golden era” of all solid body electric guitars. It is the most sought after and collectable time period for vintage guitars in general. The allure of their sound and playability captivated guitar icons such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney and Duane Allman with the later 1958 to 1960 Les Paul Standard Sunburst models fetching over $500,000. For a clean, original example. The Les Paul Special model filled the space between the top-of-the-line Les Paul Customs/ Standards and the student model Les Paul Junior. All made with the same care and materials at the same Kalamazoo, MI factory in the 1950’s.

This Gibson Les Paul Special (Serial Number 6 12811) was made in the Gibson factory, Kalamazoo, MI in 1956. This is a particularly clean and original example. The finish shows almost no evidence of playwear. The only notable change on this instrument and the sole reason it does not get the coveted “mint condition” designation, is the virtually unnoticeable replacement of the original jack plate with a slightly larger (same style) black one. The original screw holes from the original jack plate are underneath the new(er) one, hidden from view. The factory P-90 pickups that Gibson made iconic boast readings of 7.9 K Ohms in the Bridge position and 8.3 K Ohms in the neck. The neck is a full, round, real 1950’s profile that fits well in the hand and is comfortable playing chords and leads. The factory-original frets show little to no play wear. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is in excellent/ near mint condition as well. Included with this example is the original alligator chipboard case in excellent condition as well. Also included are the instruments original, factory hang tags. This kind of set in this condition is a truly “special” find and is a true joy to hold and an inspiration to play.
